Preventive Behaviors of HIV/AIDS based on Health Belief Model among Students of University of Medical Sciences

Background and Objectives: Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) infection is a major global public health issue. Given that young people are at higher risk of contracting this virus and the importance of identifying the growth trend of this issue, the present study aimed to identify predictors of self-efficacy for HIV prevention based on the health belief model in students of Babol University of Medical Sciences.

Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 250 students using a convenience sample in 2024. The data collection tool was a questionnaire based on the health belief model. The collected data were analyzed using various statistical tests in SPSS software.

Results: In this study, 48.8% were female. Self-efficacy was significantly influenced by psychological factors, especially perceived benefits, perceived barriers, and perceived severity (p<0/05), but demographic variables such as gender, parental education, and economic status did not have a significant effect (p>0/05). The health belief model constructs together predicted 20.5 of the variance in self-efficacy.

Conclusion: Measuring self-efficacy and its predictors will be of great help in finding effective ways of prevention as well as in deciding on the implementation of intervention programs and evidence-based policies in this field.
